VAMPIRE BATS

Flow was sent by Discovery Canada’s Daily Planet Program to Pernambuco in North East Brazil to shoot and produce a documentary segment about vampire bats. 3-man crew of Producer-Director Barney Lankester-Owen, Recife sound operator Guma Farias and a local guide used a Sony FS7, LED panel lights and GoPro cameras to film researcher Enrico Bernard from the Federal University of Pernambuco in Recife, Brasil taking us deep inside the bat caves of the Caatinga region.

Bernard analysed bat guano samples taken from the cave and discovered strains of human DNA, suggesting livestock depletion in the area had led to vampire bats feeding on human blood whilst they are sleeping. The rushes were sent to Canada for editing before being broadcast on the show.
