The spark for 2013’s social unrest in Brazil was a nationwide hike in public transport fares but this quickly broadened to resentment over the billions of dollars of taxpayer’s money being spent on the World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games and the treatment of protesters by police. In a country where the minimum wage is less than $300 dollars per month, hundreds of thousands of people have ook to the streets to express their frustration that $15 billion of public money has been marked for spending on the two mega events.
This report, which features footage from the front line of the street protests, was filmed on June 13 the historic centre of Rio de Janeiro for MSN News, produced by Barney Lankester-Owen/Flow Films and executive produced by storyhunter.tv. Images from this piece have since been licensed by HBO, BBC, Anmesty International and many others.
