One take aerial shot of Candelaria Church at night. This church is one of Rio de Janeiro’s least exploited and in my opinion, most graceful landmarks. The Portuguese colonial baroque facade contrasts with the irregular brutalism of the skyscrapers behind it along the Presidente Vargas Avenue. As we rise above the church the modern avenue behind it appears revealing the urban setting, where Candelaria is the start and end of Rio’s arterial road to the north. The drone allows us to feel the context, rising up past the splendid, over-the-top facade to reveal the pulse of incessant traffic and lights in a straight line leading to vanishing point. For me this shot represents Rio’s uncomfortable yet poignant and ever-present relationship with its past.
